Fishing near Sycamore Cottage

The closest place to do some family fishing is Cogra Moss, a reservoir just a few minutes drive away.

Cogra Moss allows fly fishing and has Rainbow and Brown trout.

Postcode to get there is CA14 4SH. You will need to buy a permit to fish there.

It is also just a really nice place to take your dogs for a walk around the reservoir and through the woodland around it.

From the base of the reservoir you can also do a walk up to Blake Fell which affords you beautiful views over the Northern Lake District fells, Scotland, the Solway Coast and the Isle of Man.

Another brilliant spot for fishing in the area is the River Derwent, which winds it way from Scafell Pike, through Derwent Water, Bassenthwaite and through Workington until it empties in the Irish Sea. More information and day permits are available from Castle Fisheries, Cockermouth.

And since you are in the Lake District after all, here are a list of nearby lakes/locations where you are allowed to fish either for free or with a permit.

  • Bassenthwaite - good for pike fishing. Keswick Information Centre sells rod licences and permits.

  • The River Esk in Eskdale - good for salmon and sea trout - more information here.

  • The Solway Firth - one of the best sea angling locations in the UK. More information can be found here.
